FURTHER RESEARCH
1. JOBS: Fabrice Flipo rightly used the term ’job blackmail’ - i.e. degrowth means more unemployment. Let’s reply by de-coupling jobs from ’the economy’ and seeing job distribution for what it is, namely a political decision. Some societies have known the RIGHT TO PAID EMPLOYMENT, and my city (Zürich) is moving in this direction now. Could be in addition to the ’guaranteed’ or ’citizens’ income. But de-couple jobs from economics.
2. BEAUTY: Let’s investigate the congruence between a shrunken economy and a more beautiful world. I.e., a world with a smaller economy is probably one that is quieter (fewer machines) and where the proportion between the man-made and the natural has shifted towards the natural or at least agricultural. An astounding majority of people would welcome this. Moreover, time would be freed to better or at least more carefully design those things that we still do make. Perhaps there is a correlation between the hand-made and the beautiful, leaving the perfect and the mass-produced a smaller place.
3. MORE POLITICS: Since efficiency, sufficiency and population rebounds are probably very large, let’s give more priority to the social marketing of global, direct solutions like rationing or taxes. If sustainable production and sustainable consumption are in fact not environmental tools, but rather affluence tools within politically-determined environmental throughput caps, we should research the design and acceptance of the direct solutions of rationing or taxes. Address others not as producers, consumers or reproducers but as citizens with a tough choice to make.
4. USE THE STERN-REPORT ARGUMENT: Degrowth may be ’bad’ or at least hard, but fast depletion and climate change are EVEN WORSE. Let’s honestly say that controlled, designed degrowth is THE LESSER EVIL (the possible health and aesthetic pluses of a smaller economy notwithstanding...).
5. POPULATION: Even at the degrowth conference this received little attention. Sure, consumption levels per person and number of hours ’worked’ (production) must both fall, but we owe other citizens at least a rudimentary answer to the very very very hard question of the carrying capacity of the planet at some modest level of affluence and some given types of technology and levels of efficiency. We must seriously compute this. Is the predicted number of 9.5 billion human beings simply too much, even leaving wild plants and animals out of the equation? We need less avoidance, less equivocation and less wishful thinking on this issue. Is there a painful collision between degrowth and humanism?
