Paradigm shift: how to link sustainable consumption to mainstream policies

The present growth model seems to be not only environmentally and socially problematic, but also economically unsustainable. Increasing trade deficits, widening budget shortfalls, inflationary pressure, escalating personal credit card debt, and the subprime mortgage crisis are all symptoms of a deeper crisis in the present economic system. Mainstream politicians and economists are currently being pressed to address these issues and this situation raises questions about how to connect possibilities for immaterial well-being with a macroeconomic change away from the contemporary growth paradigm. In this session we expect contributions that address a possible ‘paradigm shift’ that connects the idea of sustainable consumption at the micro scale with strategies that promote de-growth on the macro scale. We invite both conceptual and theoretical contributions as well as case studies that further the ideas of a possible paradigm shift.
